Ana María Otero Casal is Professor of Microbiology at the University of Santiago de Compostela and coordinator of the DITAPREIN research group. She completed her PhD at the University of Santiago de Compostela on the Biotechnology of Photosynthetic Microorganisms (1995) and undertook postdoctoral research stays at the National Institute for Basic Biology (Okazaki, Japan, 1996–1997) and at the Università degli Studi di Firenze (Italy, 1999–2001).

She has published more than 100 papers indexed in WOS or SCOPUS, which have received a total of 3,893 citations, with an h-index of 37 (Scopus). She is also the author of 2 books, 5 book chapters, several outreach articles, and 4 patents. She has supervised or co-supervised 18 doctoral theses.

Since 2006, she has served as principal investigator on 9 projects funded through European (1), national (2), regional (5), and private foundation (1) calls, in addition to several significant research contracts with companies, totalling more than €1.5 million.

She has served continuously since 2012 as an evaluator and reviewer for projects under the European SME Programme, Horizon 2020, and Horizon Europe, and is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Spanish National Commission for the Evaluation of Research Activity in Field 5. She has been a member of the editorial board of Algal Research (Elsevier) since its foundation.

Professor Otero is an expert in scientific communication techniques and teaches courses on scientific presentations for university students and academic staff.
