Hipólito Gómez Couso is an Assistant Professor (Profesor Contratado Doctor) in the area of Parasitology at the University of Santiago de Compostela, a member of the Interdisciplinary Group on Pharmaceutical Technology, Parasitic Immunobiology and Waterborne Parasitoses, and the current Secretary of the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology. She received the Extraordinary Doctorate Award and has carried out several research stays at European centres with leading experts in Cryptosporidium and solar drinking water disinfection (SODIS): Centre for Infections (London, UK), Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Rome, Italy), Complutense University of Madrid, Plataforma Solar de Almería, and Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Dübendorf, Switzerland).
She has extensive experience with Cryptosporidium, studying this waterborne parasite in multiple aspects: epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and disinfection, as well as detection in water, environmental and food samples. She has participated in 10 research projects related to Cryptosporidium and other parasitic protozoa, and authored more than 50 scientific articles and 100 conference presentations.
