Rey Varela, Diego

Research group GIPA

Address:

Diego Rey Varela holds a PhD from the University of Santiago de Compostela and specialises in the study of microbial pathologies relevant to the aquaculture sector. He has a multidisciplinary background, having undertaken research stays at INL (nanosensors) and the University of Aveiro (phage therapy), as well as working on quorum sensing (DITAPREIN) and bivalve metagenomics with Dr J. Dubert (GIPA-USC).

His doctoral thesis on Aeromonas salmonicida enabled the development of subunit vaccines based on membrane proteins, collaborating with companies such as Stolt Sea Farm in the transfer and validation of animal health strategies. He later completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at Umeå University (Sweden) in the laboratory of Dr Felipe Cava, funded by the Wenner-Gren Foundation, where he studied metal resistance and cell wall biology in Vibrio cholerae and Photobacterium damselae.

He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at USC within the European project Cure4Aqua, focused on validating cutting-edge technologies for the early detection, prevention and treatment of aquaculture diseases. His scientific interests include bacterial homeostasis, applied transcriptomics, and the design of DNA/RNA vaccines to improve health management in marine aquaculture.
