Noemí, Buján Gómez

Postdoctoral Researcher B - Xunta de Galicia

Research group GIPA

Address: CIBUS

Noemí Buján began her research career as a PhD student in the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), supported by an FPI fellowship (Ministry of Education and Science, Spain). She completed her international PhD in 2018, focused on the study of the genus Edwardsiella, an important fish pathogen, receiving the Extraordinary PhD Award from the University of Santiago de Compostela and the Best PhD Thesis Award from the specialised group “Taxonomy, Phylogeny and Diversity” of the Spanish Society for Microbiology.

In 2019 she was awarded a competitive postdoctoral fellowship funded by the Xunta de Galicia (Modality A) to undertake a research stay abroad. This research was carried out in the laboratory of Dr Tim van Opijnen at Boston College, an internationally leading group in high-throughput bacterial functional genomics, antibiotic resistance, and pathogen–host interactions involving the pathogens Streptococcus pneumoniae and Yersinia pestis.

Following this postdoctoral stay, she obtained a second competitive postdoctoral fellowship funded by the Xunta de Galicia (Modality B), which allowed her to continue her research at the University of Santiago de Compostela. Building on her doctoral and postdoctoral experience, she began developing her own independent research line focused on bacterial secretion systems and virulence factors in fish pathogens from a proteomics perspective. As principal investigator, she launched a project aimed at expanding knowledge of proteins secreted by different secretion systems and their role in infection processes.

Throughout her career she has published 14 scientific articles, participated in 34 conferences, and collaborated in numerous projects with private companies and public institutions. According to the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), 70% of her publications are in Q1 journals.
