She served as Director of the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology at USC from 2004 to 2013, and since 1999 she has coordinated the PhD programme “Advances in Microbial and Parasitic Biology”. Her main research interests include the phenotypic and molecular characterisation of bacterial pathogens, the study of their virulence mechanisms, and the development of strategies for the prevention and control of fish diseases.
She is the author of more than 300 articles and 22 book chapters, the inventor of eight patents for use in aquaculture, and has led or participated in more than 90 R&D projects and contracts, as well as several research networks. She has supervised 17 doctoral theses, delivered more than 100 lectures and courses at meetings and workshops on aquaculture and microbiology, and is Editor-in-Chief of the journal “Diseases of Aquatic Organisms”. She has received the National “Jaime Ferrán” Award (SEM), the “Galician Excellence in Research” Title (AEGACA), the “Biologist of the Year” Award (COBG), and the “María Josefa Wonenburger Award” (Muller e Ciencia Unit, Xunta de Galicia). She is a full member of the “Real Academia Galega de Ciencias” (RAGC), the “Real Academia Galega de Farmacia” (RAGF), and a member of the “Consello da Cultura Galega”.
